The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has officially approved Gulfstream Aerospace’s supplemental type certificate (STC) for the installation of a SpaceX Starlink satellite communication system on Gulfstream’s G650 and G650ER models. This milestone brings a new level of internet connectivity and flexibility to Gulfstream operators, allowing Gulfstream’s own service centers to handle the installation process—a more streamlined alternative to the previous option of installation by a Starlink dealer through the Nextant Aerospace STC, issued in August 2023.
Starlink’s Technology and Installation Specifications
Starlink, known for its low-latency, high-speed internet connectivity through low-earth-orbit (LEO) satellites, has been a sought-after addition to private and business jets. The Starlink system for the G650/650ER includes an electronically steered antenna mounted above the fuselage, over the emergency exit windows near the wing. Weighing approximately 48 pounds, the antenna measures 39 inches in length, 31 inches in width, and has a height of 1.3 inches at the centerline, increasing to three inches at the edges. This compact, low-profile design enables efficient aerodynamics while maximizing internet connectivity for passengers.
Cost and Service Plans
The retail price for the Starlink system, including the antenna, power supply unit, two wireless access points, and the necessary wiring harness, is set at $150,000. Service plans are also designed with flexibility in mind:
$2,000 per month for 20 GB of data (with additional data at $100 per GB),
$10,000 per month for unlimited data.
With worldwide coverage via Starlink’s LEO satellite network, passengers can expect download speeds between 40 and 220 Mbps, delivering a seamless browsing and streaming experience for travelers, whether on business or leisure.
Gulfstream’s Commitment to In-Flight Connectivity
As Gulfstream’s president of customer support, Derek Zimmerman, notes, "Starlink is an offering that we know is important to operators." Gulfstream has invested significant resources to prepare for this certification, leveraging its extensive service network to offer a smooth installation experience for clients. “Having the capability to install this connectivity upgrade at our own facilities, in the hands of our trusted team of experts, is part of our ongoing commitment to our customers,” Zimmerman added.
Looking Ahead: Expanded Starlink STCs for Other Gulfstream Models
Gulfstream Aerospace is already developing additional STCs to bring Starlink capabilities to more of its fleet. Upcoming models slated for Starlink compatibility include:
G800
G700
G600
G500
G400
G280
Legacy models, including GIV, GIV-X/G450, GV, and GV-SP/G550.
This broader rollout signifies a shift toward enhanced in-flight connectivity across Gulfstream’s product lineup, enabling a more productive and comfortable in-flight experience for travelers. As demand for high-speed in-flight connectivity grows, the Gulfstream-Starlink collaboration provides an optimal solution for luxury and efficiency, reinforcing Gulfstream’s position at the forefront of aviation technology.
This FAA approval is a testament to Gulfstream’s dedication to meeting customer needs through strategic partnerships and innovative solutions, setting a new benchmark for connectivity options in the business jet market.
